Working on Water

School Program – Year 9 & 10

21ST TO 23RD OF OCTOBER 2024

Jump aboard and get ready to learn about the Tasmanian seafood industry.

Working on Water (WoW) is a three-day program for yea 9 and 10 students to explore Tasmania’s diverse employment opportunities on, in and around water.

Seafood Industry Tasmania (SIT) creates engaging educational experiences for students, including touring aquaculture farms, dissecting fish, and visiting marine research centres.

Since it started in 2008, SIT has worked with over 120 businesses and more than 40 sponsors. Over 700 students have participated in SIT’s WoW program. Students gain knowledge and organisations meet potential employees. Feedback from students and businesses is always positive.

In 2023, we had more than 60 applications and only room for 30! Young Tasmanians are interested in pursuing career paths within our seafood and maritime industries and this program introduces students to their many career possibilities.

When is the program?

Date: Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd, 2024
Where: Areas in the South-east of Tasmania

What does the program involve?

Our WoW programs vary each year but generally include facility tours at our seafood industry partners, introduction to various fisherman boats and divers, and scientifical discussions with researchers.

We would love to hear from you about what you would like to do. Please include these suggestions in your application.

Do we get to go out on a boat?

You do! We are still creating the 2024 WoW Program but don’t fear, we will have you out on the water with the wind in your hair soon.

What should I bring?

A positive attitude and a thirst for knowledge. You will need to wear enclosed footwear throughout the program and comfortable clothes. A packed lunch by students is required for two of three days.

Will it cost me anything to attend?

Costs: Just your time!

We are very fortunate that we have fantastic sponsors and presenters who have kindly donated their time and money in order to put this event on for students.

Thank you to WoW 2024 Program Sponsors
